POLICY SHEET FOR Physics Instructor: Mr. Holzworth Office: Room 108 Email: jholzworth@behs.com
Materials: Textbook, one folder with two pockets, protractor, ruler, calculator capable of exponents, Ti-30 or better. Goggles for labs will be provided. Grading Policy: 50% Tests, 25% Labs, Class Presentation, and Special Projects, 15% Quizzes, and 10% homework. Tests will cover one chapter plus any special topics covered during the same time frame. About one every other week. If a student fails a test they can take a one time retest for a maximum score of 70 within one week of the original test date. Homework will be given most nights and will be checked at least once per week. A plan of the week which lists all the work for the week will be posted in the classroom every Monday or the preceding Friday. Quizzes: About one per week on material being covered. Most will be announced the day before some will be “pop” quizzes. Labs: About one every two weeks, critical that you read the night before. Most labs will be informal. This means you will answer questions about what you did. One or two labs per semester will be formal. These will require a write up in which you explain what you did. A formal lab will have the same weight as two informal labs. A guideline will be provided for formal labs. Class presentation: A 3 minute oral presentation on a topic selected by me that has to do with physics which uses a visual aid ( in most cases poster board with pictures) Must have at least two sources. Special Projects: About one per quarter. Examples of past special projects: discussion and written report on issues in society that involve physics (danger huge meteors pose to the earth or alternative energy sources) Make up work: Student responsibility to make it happen. Homework usually will not be made up. Student will be expected to catch up on content through peers or extra help with me. Tests must be made up ASAP but no later than within two weeks of return from absence. Quizzes, special projects, class presentations and labs must be made up within one week of return from absence. Extra help: Tuesdays and Thursdays 3 to 3:30 and everyday at lunch (if I don’t have lunch duty). Additional times can be arranged. I am almost always available before or after school or at lunch on any given day if you ask. Expectations: 1. Textbook, note taking materials and two pocket folder brought to class every day. Lab materials brought as required. Read the lab beforehand! 2. Maintain notes, handouts and any other pertinent materials on the current unit in the two pocket folder. 3. Follow oral and written directions. Ask questions whenever you need to. 4. Follow school rules at all times- nuff said!!!
